These things we do, so ALL may LEAD!

Built in 2002, North Wilkes Middle School welcomes students from Mountain View Elementary School, Mulberry Elementary School, and Traphill Elementary School, as well as students new to our community or joining us from private, home, and charter schools.  Our student body of approximately 490 students meets each day from 7:45 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.  Our building was designed in the shape of the letter “H,” with a separate hallway dedicated to each grade level 6-8.  We offer exploratory classes throughout our building in the areas of art, chorus, band, computer skills, coding, technology and design, health, and physical education.

Being a LEAD School

NWMS is privileged to be a Leader in Me school, where we cultivate a culture of learning, growth mindset, and community based on practicing Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Teens. In 2019, NWMS was named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School, which is the highest distinction a Leader in Me school can earn. At out school, everyone works daily to model the habits, adults and students. Our staff has been committed to ongoing training on the 7 Habits and LEAD implementation since the summer of 2016, and we teach our students to lead their lives and learning with the habits daily in all classes with special LEAD lessons, Gear Up lessons, and in Sharpen the Saw clubs and Impact Community Groups biweekly.  Students have many opportunities to show leadership in our school with school-wide and classroom jobs, student-led conferences, serving on student Lighthouse Team, arts and athletic team leadership roles, Reader Leader mentors to elementary feeder schools, and participating in Science Olympiad.

Academics

North Wilkes Middle School strives to combine high academic standards based on the NC Common Core Standards with vast opportunities for students to also grow behaviorally, socially, and emotionally.  Our daily schedule is structured to include 70 minute core classes in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science, in addition to two 43-minute exploratory classes, LEAD UP block, and a Jaguar Academy literacy block. Our school also focuses on cultivating global ready  skills, essential social-emotional skills, and a growth mindset culture to prepare students for college and career, and all students have a personal Chromebook for their use at school.  Our faculty engages in professional collaboration through weekly data team meetings, content planning professional learning communities, and multi-disciplinary action teams, and all teachers have 90-minutes of planning daily.   To further support student learning, we offer SMART LUNCH daily for 10 minutes to provide tutoring to students during the regular school day, as well as tutoring from 3:30-5:00 p.m. each Tuesday.  All students are allotted 10 minutes of physical activity time daily built into their 40 minute lunch block.  Our creative schedule also allows our core classes to rotate the order in which students attend each quarter, and students practice “Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw” by participating in clubs one Friday a month. Students are encouraged and empowered to showcase leadership daily in our classrooms and beyond by serving on our Student Lighthouse Team, applying for school and classroom jobs, and representing our school in various capacities in the community.

Parent Leadership

Our school has dedicated parents interested in working together with school administration, students, and our community to help meet school goals.  Parents can become involved through PTO/Athletic Booster Club, by serving as a parent representative on our NWMS Lighthouse Team, or participating on our Parent Lighthouse Team.  These parents work together to coordinate different events throughout the year, including parent nights, PBIS quarterly rewards, volunteer efforts, and school fundraisers.
